Riverside insects, Elton

Tooka quick look along the River Nene at Elton Bridge this lunchtime and was rewarded with views of Scarce Chaser, Hairy Dragonfly and Red-eyed Damselfly (none sitting for photos) as well as these. There were also masses of Dark Bush-cricket nymphs.

Banded Demoiselle Calopteryx splendens eating a mayfly (probably Ephemera vulgata)

And now the full horror in HD:

Xanthogramma pedisequum

Myathropa florea

Melangyna umbellatarum

Hi Brian

Your PLatycheirus is actually a Melangyna - probably M. compositarum/labiatarum

Roger

Thanks very much Roger. Was very lazy with this one - saw the pale bands as grey spots and didn't look much further. Given the pale bands and the rather shiny thorax I've gone for M. umbellatarum based on your (and Stuart's) brilliant new book.
