Apparently its been "over here" for some time (30 years?) but this is the first time I've knowingly seen one anyway. This is the so-called "Euro Wasp", a recent colonist and presumably continuing to spread. It is slightly larger than the Common Wasp (
Vespula vulgaris) but otherwise is a similar social wasp.
